As of September 25, 2012, 48 states have reported West Nile virus infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes.
A total of 3,545 cases of West Nile virus disease in people, including 147 deaths, have been reported to CDC, up from 3,142 reported the week before.
Of these, 1,816 (51%) were classified as neuroinvasive disease (such as meningitis or encephalitis) and 1,729 (49%) were classified as non-neuroinvasive disease.
Seventy percent of the cases have been reported from eight states (Texas, Mississippi, South Dakota, Michigan, California, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Illinois) and 38 percent of all cases have been reported from Texas.
