WTO: Millennium Round

The choices being made during the Millennium Round will have a huge impact on our everyday life. Much more than we can imagine. And we risk being fooled and cheated. I'll explain.

On the one hand, we have the US representatives with the task of defending the interests of companies and farmers, the latter being concentrated on producing more and more at lower costs. On the other hand, the European delegates worry about the same issues, but focus more on quality production, more typical of the Old Continent. Australia and Canada also try to get as many economic benefits as possible, and so do the other countries.

It is obvious and fair to try to get the highest benefits from a substantially economic negotiation. But this time the decisions taken will also involve our health, and could have unforeseeable consequences that no one knows how to deal with. And this is not a matter of hysterical reactions or panic, it's a question of trying to avoid unnecessary - and most of all not chosen - hazards, because in this whole issue, the citizens of the whole world are excluded from decision making. That's the way it works, we have delegated others to take decisions for us. But it seems that here everyone cares only about money (which is great and indispensable of course) but at all costs, without even asking the questions we , and millions of people like us, really care about.

As regards the protection of traditional and quality foods - such as certain types of cheese, charcuterie, olive oil, honey, chocolate - the functionaries and politicians of the European Union have shown a lot more attention to the interests of big corporations than of those who pay their own wages, ie. us. Maybe it is not just superficiality and carelessness, and these are the men who should defend our interests, in a wide sense, at the Millennium Round.

However we all have at least two ways to make ourselves heard and influence the choices of our delegates and of those above them.

The first is the weapon of boycotting those products made by companies that don't respect our rights as consumers.

The second is to voice our concerns through the media. Let's remember that the media, when urged by many requests and protests, usually report about them and something happens.

The mice will play, welcome to the party. Dear cats, it's time to wake up.
