In Australia a government agency will control research and diffusion of genetically modified organism The Interim Office of the Gene Technology Regulator will be the government agency which will keep under strict control the Australian and foreign companies that do research on GMOs or distribute them in the country. The new agency will have the power to stop a research project if considered a potential danger for public health, safety or the environment. The US company Monsanto's request for selling modified cotton in May has been blocked and further documentation from the company has been requested. This temporary agency is the forerunner of the permanent one which is to be established on July 1, 2001, according to the announcement made last May.
