After
having reached the considerable age of 57 (she is born on Aug, 27th in 1941 in Midelo,
Cabo Verde), Cesaria Evora has finally met success, even in Italy. She deserves it, obviously, because |

|
she's
one of the most extraordinary singer of her tiny african country.
She's
unique in introducing to us the melodies of her beloved little islands, with struggling
pathos. Her songs, called in the Cabo Verde dialect "Mornas " and
"Coladeras" have an inner charm, a thin melancholy, a "saudade" which
make the Portuguese Fado result pale and tasteless.
Just
like the previous, acclaimed "Miss Perfumado" ( which was the first album
recorded in France in '92), her last "Cabo Verde" is full of aromas, perfumes,
colors, and tastes: the spleen of the song called "Coragem irmen", the nostalgy
of "Partida", the bloody ruthlessness of "Sangue de beirona".
If
you listen to them carefully, you can understand why some French critics have compared her
style to Billy Holiday's legendary one, and why a critic of "Le monde" has said,
after having seen her performing at the Olympia, " she's an aristocratic of the seven
notes, voted to the "morna" with an almost vulgar dedication".
That's
perfect.
