Health-related quality of life, belly fat and testosterone levels (2014-01-22)

Obesity is linked to lower testosterone among men, but having low testosterone levels is less closely tied to general health problems than having a big belly, as long as those low levels are still in the normal range, Dr. Marianne Andersen said. Dr. Andersen worked on the study at Odense University Hospital in Denmark.

Dr. Andersen and her colleagues asked 598 Danish men ages 60 to 74 about their quality of life using a questionnaire that measures general health, including ability to perform physical activities, pain, vitality, social functioning and emotional and mental health.
They also measured men's body fat, including stomach fat, and testosterone levels.

According to findings published in Age and Ageing, four in ten were obese and the analysis suggested men's waist size was most closely tied to their quality of life while testosterone was only modestly associated with quality of life.
