Brief history

Aesculapio, Hippocrates, Galen… are some of the great doctors of ancient times, "illuminated" doctors, experts in philosophy, physics, theology… and students of the human body and its relation to nature. By opening a book on the (Western) history of medicine one may see how, on one hand these doctors agreed about the nature of humans and there relation to nature, and on the other how they disagreed on the causes of diseases and therapies. Only in the nineteenth century does medicine start to have a common language, and common ideas about anatomy, physiology (study of the organ’s functions), and scientific method. It is in this time that the cell is discovered and considered the building brick of life, thus overwhelming the animist idea of cosmic energies. Thus medicine becomes more objective and less subjective, tied to a cause-effect study in examining the causes and determining a cure for an illness. Today there is a standard procedure that doctors follow. A diagnosis is formulated after a medical exam supported by lab test results, then a therapy is created, which can be pharmaceutical or surgical. Then a series of advice is given to correct an unhealthy lifestyle.
