Acute and Chronic disorders

Another way to group diseases, other than functional or organic, is by examining their evolution, and dividing them amongst chronic and acute.

Acute disorders: A morbid functional or organic process, with a rapid evolution. Symptoms and signs of the disease appear quickly and violently, most of the time having a direct cause (ex. flu caused by influenza virus). In these cases there is a good chance of healing in a rather brief time, thanks to our immune system and to speedy medical assistance. When an acute disorder occurs in a person with a weak immune system, is ignores, or worst yet is subject to malpractice, it may become chronic. An example of this is the cervical whip lash that with time can cause cervical arthosis).

Chronic disorders: A morbid functional or organic process, which has a slow and progressive evolution. It is likely caused by a series of factors which may not cause the disease alone, but together are directly responsible for the pathology. An example is a lumbar arthosis, which is caused by micro- traumatism, posture vices, obesity, muscular tension, psychological tension, and bad posture of the feet, etc.
