What is it?

Medicine is art and science.

Science because it is based on an objective study (thus provable) of the causes and symptoms of a disease. A reference to the cause effect process can always be made thanks also to the always improving diagnostic exams.

Art because one practicing medicine (the doctor) must have the ability to extrapolate from a mass of contradictory information, or a page of instrumental results those elements that are of true importance in deciding whether to treat or observe an illness. The doctor must decide if a clinical element is worthy or not of study, and value each patients therapy, to se if it may cause more damages than the illness itself. All this must be done with a blend of medical knowledge, intuition and judgment, known as the "art of medicine", which is not less important than scientific knowledge.

In all the world one becomes a doctor after having acquired a degree, which takes an average of six years. In this time a student faces various scientific fields, all relative to the body and its functioning, but also faces an internship in a hospital structure coming in direct contact with the ill. After this a student must choose a field in which to specialize (a university course which will last another four years), choosing to focus on one system or another (ex. pneumatology- lungs and bronchi, otorhinolaryngology- ears, nose, throat, neurology- central and peripheral nervous system, psychiatrist- the functioning of the mind, etc.).
