Objective Exam

The actual medical check up is called "objective exam," meaning the observation, and disclosure on the patients body of objective "signs" of an illness. These signs are objective data, verifiable and unmistakable, which is to be distinguished from "symptoms" described by the patient (ex. pain in the neck area is a symptom described by a patient while the contraction of the neck muscles is a sign of a stiff neck observed by the doctor).

The objective exam must be carried through methodically, exhaustively, and practically by a doctor, "from the tip of the toes to the tips of the hair." This must be done taking into account the patient’s comfort and reserve, paying extreme attention to all anomalies which differ from the physiological norm (which varies according to age), and in a systematic manner so not to forget any important part.

Observation, palpation, and auscultation (in the past doctors "tasted" urine and smelled sweat and breath as well) are the fundaments of a good objective exam.
