Functional and Organic diseases
Diseases can be divided into two groups, functional and organic.
Functional diseases: are morbid processes in which the normal functioning of an organ or apparatus ( ex. gastroenteric apparatus)is damaged, along with the organ itself.
Organic diseases: by organic diseases we mean morbid processes in which the anatomical structure of an organ is harmed to various degrees, thus interfering with its function.
Functional diseases: are diseases that if not cured can either heal themselves, thanks to the immune system, or worsen to the point of becoming organic diseases.
Organic diseases can also heal spontaneously (rare). Most times the presence of an organic disease is made clear, for the damage suffered by the organs reflects into some functioning problem. In some rare cases the organic illness does not manifest itself until the disease has developed, an example of this is cancer, which can grow and proliferate damaging organs, but it does not manifest itself until its too late.
