Doctor patient relation

"The significance of a close doctor patient relation is never too emphasized, because from this depend many diagnosis and therapies. One of the qualities of a doctor is the interest for mankind, and the secret of curing a patient is to care for him."
Dr. Francis Peabody – XIX cent.

It is hard to describe in detail or outline by stages a doctor patient relation. It depends on various factors (factors studied by psychoanalysis) regarding the encounter of various personalities, both of doctors and of patients. More often it is possible for a doctor to describe what allows this "energy current" to flow, and allow the best results of the doctor- patient work to be obtained.

First it is important for the doctor to know how to listen and become aware of how the patient describes the problem, what he feels emotionally due to the problem, how he interprets his emotions, the advantages and disadvantages, what symptoms are more accentuated, what are his fears, hopes, story of his life (origins, work, family), and to what extension is he hoping to get better. Basically what he is in a holistic way, the emotional- physical- social context in which he lives and lived the disease.

Secondly the doctor must be "neutral" or free from prejudices toward his/her patient, whom may have lifestyle, attitude and values that he does not agree with. The doctor must always keep in mind that his primary motivation is the patients best interest.

Lastly, the doctor must know how to communicate (sincerely and openly) with the patient. He must explain in a simplistic manner what the diagnosis is, that the lab test results mean, what future exams may be done and all that a patient is to expect. The doctor also has to explain the therapy, possible results and side effects, consequences and real timing of the healing.
