What are they?

"Future doctors will not prescribe medicine, but will involve their patients in the healing of the organism’s structure and functions, in the alimentation and in the prevention of the disease."

Thomas Edison

Edison’s words reveled to be insightful, today in the Western world there is an increasing desire for a human and personal type of healing. Many doctors are looking to supply this type of service. As a matter of fact in the last twenty years there has been a flowering of alternative medicine, some practices coming from ancient traditions, such as Chinese medicine or ayurvedic medicine, others of more modern roots, such as homeopathy, phytotherapy, and healing with Bach flowers.

What is the common characteristic which ties all of these practices together? They share the fact that they are natural. This not only implies that the products used are natural, along with the healing method, but that they also consider the patient as a "natural being". This implies a holistic view of body- spirit, body- mind, and body- emotions. These are considered of primary importance when studying the disease and the possible cure.

Two are the main principles which characterize all alternative medicine practices, first the patient has a right to be cured as a person rather than as a clinical case, and secondly the healing process should not bring about any damages (such as the side effects of western medicine) but rather stimulate the "healing force" which lies within all. The stimulation can occur through the needles of acupuncture, homeopathic or ayurvedic remedies, or form the herb used in phytotherapy.
