Alimentary causes
In China, the study of foods, their energetic value and their unbalancing effects, is as ancient as acupuncture. All elements introduced in the body are transformed in yin and yang energy. There are yin foods and yang foods, here are some:
Main Yin Foods: corn, barley, cabbage, oats, aubergine, tomato, potato, pickle, asparagus, peas, mushrooms, oysters, muscles, trout, eel, octopus, lemon, banana, pear, grapes, honey, coffee, chocolate, beer, mineral water, frog, horse meat, chicken, yogurt, butter, garlic, etc.
Main Yang Foods: rice, grain, lettuce, Belgian lettuce, chick peas, small radish, onion, parsley, carrot, tuna, salmon, crawfish, sardine, caviar, almonds, olives, strawberry, chestnuts, apples, olive oil, tea, turkey, eggs, pheasant, milk, blue cheese, Swiss cheese, cinnamon, basil, sole, chicory, anchovy, thyme, rosemary, sage, etc.
Food Tastes
Other than the yin- yang division of food, there exists another one, that by taste. There are five tastes, just like there are five elements that compose the world, and to each correspond relative organs.
Sour taste (liver and gall bladder)
Sweet taste (stomach and spleen)
Bitter taste (heart and small intestine)
Spicy taste (lungs and colon)
Salty taste (kidneys and bladder)
Each taste stimulates an element, a movement, and the relative organ.
Sour taste- stimulates wood, thus the liver, the gall bladder, eye sight, the eyes, nails, muscles, etc.
Bitter taste- stimulates fire, thus the heart, the small intestine, the face, blood, etc.
Sweet taste- belongs to the earth, thus stimulates the spleen, stomach, mouth, taste, etc.
Spicy taste- belongs to fire, thus stimulates lungs, colon, skin, hair, smell, etc.
Salty taste- characterized by water therefore stimulates kidneys, bladder bones, teeth, hearing, etc.
Excess of one taste
Chinese medicine believes that the excess or abuse of one taste affects the body negatively. Lets see how.
Excess of sour taste- harms the liver for it gives it excessive energy. It lowers the energy level of the spleen (sour overcomes sweet) and releases the energy used to tone the skin. It also harms the hearts energy.
Possible symptoms: anger, muscular cramps, light anemia, gastritis, constipation, anxiety, loss of appetite, and mental instability.
Excess of bitter taste- harms the heart for it gives it too much energy. Weakens the lungs, and the skin (bitter overwhelms spicy).Releases the bones and kidneys energy and increases in a harmful way the energy to the stomach.
Possible symptoms: palpitations, angina pectoris, loss of appetite, gingivitis, bronchitis, emphysema, constipation, menstrual pain, loss of the libido, and loss of eye sight.
Excess of sweet taste- gives too much energy to spleen and stomach. Causes a loss of the kidneys energy (sweet overwhelms salty) this will in turn cause bone pains and fragility of the hair. It also releases the energy from the liver and reduces that of the lungs.
Possible symptoms: gastritis, ulcer, sadness, difficulties breathing, skin problems, impotence, bone problems, joint hypertension.
Excess of spicy taste- increases the lungs energy harming the liver. Since spicy overwhelms acid it also damages the heart, thus the mental energy.
Possible symptoms: skin hemorrhages, frail hair and skin, loss of the libido, mental confusion, muscular cramps, anemia, gastritis.
Excess of salty taste- increases too much the kidneys energy, and weakens the bones. The hearts energy will be suffocated, since salty overwhelms bitter, and blood pressure will be slowed down. The spleen and the stomach will be weakened and the muscles will be contracted.
Possible symptoms: buzzing of the ears, vertigo, fatigue, retention of liquids, periodical cephalalgia.
