Climatic Causes

There are climatic five factors which affect diseases:

cold

heat

dryness

humidity

wind

These factors can act alone or together. Their strength is augmented if one is subject to one in a season when they are normally absent, such as being subject to the cold of a fan or air conditioning in a typically warm season such as summer. The body’s energy tries to prevent these factors from penetrating it, but when this occurs the struggle between the forces defending the body and the climatic factor can be seen as fever and inflammation.

Cold

Has a yin nature, belongs to winter and its element is water; it is related to the kidneys. When it becomes harmful, its yin nature brings about contractions and spasms (whereas a yang nature causes dilation). Shivers are a consequence of the cold, they are a contraction of the skin.

The cold once united with the wind can bring about rheumatism, respiratory problems, and loin sciatica. The kidneys and bladder are the organs most sensitive to the cold.

Heat

Has a yang nature, belongs to fire and to summer. If the heat becomes excessive the organism reacts searching for rest and cooler temperatures. There is a loss of appetite for the digestive process produces heat. Concussion, paralysis, skin problems characterized by a burning feeling, and blemishes are all related with excessive heat.

Dryness

Corresponds to autumn and is strongly related with the lungs. Dry lips and dry throat are associated with the excessive dryness. To prevent overexposure to dryness it is advisable to humidify rooms that are heated during winter.

Humidity

Corresponds to the earth and is related to the stomach and the spleen. Humidity tends to accumulate in the lower portion of the body causing swelling (legs and ankles). It also tends to augment the secretions of the body thus favoring sebum related diseases, diarrhea, and bronchial catarrh. Wind, cold, and humidity are the most common causes of rheumatism.

Wind

Is of yang nature, belongs to the spring months and is related to the liver and the gall bladder. It harms the upper body and has a powerful penetrating capacity. Once it has penetrated the body it can remain latent for a long time, and by the five elements’ generation law, it can become heat. The wind is generally responsible for all those sudden and unpredictable illnesses. Vertigo, muscular contractions, itchy skin, and many periodical cephalalgia are caused by the wind.
