Chinese Herb

The last of the Chinese medical practices is healing with herb. Herb have been studied and experimented for four or five thousand years, and are today considered proper medicine. The definition of medicine is a substances that ingested or applied on the skin, fight the cause and thus eliminate the symptoms of the disease. This is done by examining the patient and discovering what the energetic unbalance is and what causes it. The herb are used to cure the specific unbalance, and are grouped according to their therapeutic value.

Medicine that heal from outside

These herb uses alone or together cure "external syndromes", those caused by wind, wind and cold, and heat. The objective is to heal externally, for example to sweat out those energies which cause the illness.

Diseases which can be cured by this method: colds, light flues, periodical cephalalgia combined with shoulder and arm pain, or cervical pain, sinus pain, conjunction, asthma, muscular spasms in the upper body, German measles, initial stages of measles, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, trachyte, and itching skin.

Medicine that purify heat

These medicines "purify heat", they extinguish "fire" and eliminate toxins. Many viral diseases are strengthened by these herb, like German measles, measles, chicken pox, tuberculosis, trachyte, bronchitis, pneumonia, hepatitis, etc. These herb are also ineffective when the heat originates from within, as in the case of insomnia, anxiety, and other illnesses involving the mind. These herb can be used to cure illnesses caused by an external source of heat, such as overexposure to the sun and high temperatures.

Medicine that create harmony

To harmonize is to create a balance amongst all the organs, a balance that can be disrupted by intense emotional states (as anger or resentment, which causes excessive heat in the liver, thus periodical cephalalgia, anxiety, dry and bitter mouth, and acidity).

Amongst others these herb cure chronic gastritis, ulcers, some menopause problems, regularize and soothe menstrual pains.

Medicine that favor downward liberation

In this category are all those herb that have a laxative and diuretic effect on the body. The term "downward liberation" is a rather inaccurate translation of the Chinese term "xia fa" which implies the liberation of the intestine through the lower orifices of the body, thus implying a laxative and diuretic effect.

These herb help heal, spurative dermatitis, acne, stagnation of the feces, dry feces, stomatitis, stagnation of liquids in the peritoneum, pleura and pericardia.

Medicine that drain humidity

Psychological, climatic factors, and eating habits can cause drain humidity, thus altering the blood flow and increasing the elimination of liquids.

Diseases which are treatable by these herb are: cystitis, colitis, urethritis, gastric-enteritis, kidney deficiencies, cardiac deficiencies, rheumatism that involve excessive liquid in the joints, edema and swelling, cough, heaviness, water retention.

Medicine that treats cough and respiratory diseases:

These are all the herb that treat cough and asthma, by dilating the bronchi and influencing the lungs’ energy. Pharyngitis, trachyte, bronchitis, laryngitis, lung emphysema, and pneumonia are some diseases other than asthma which can be healed with these herb.

Medicines which eliminate wind and humidity

Rheumatic illnesses are cured with these herb, the main ones being arthritis, knee pain menstrual cramps, tendonitis,

Medicine that transforms humidity

These herb transform humidity and cure all those digestive pathologies, which originated due to wind, cold, and humidity. Some examples are: vomit, nausea, oppression, abdominal cramps and pains, diarrhea, and anorexia.

Methods and usage

Decoction

The herb is placed in a porcelain or terra-cotta container, and then covered with water (the amount of herb and water varies according to the prescription). Once the container is covered it is then placed on the fire to boil. It is to boil for fifteen to thirty minutes. It is then filtered, and ingested hot if the illness involves a lack of energy or caused by cold, and ingested cold if the illness is caused by heat.

Recommendations.

One is not to use metal, aluminum, or copper containers. Iron containers are allowed.

It is best to use mineral water (non carbonated)

The container should be placed on a strong fire, that is to be lowered one the boiling point is reached.

Pills

The pills are prepared mixing powdered herb with either honey, water, flower, etc. Then they are shaped into a sphere.

Dried extracts

This type of preparation was first experimented in the Western world, and then in China. It is doe by powdering the pharmaceuticals.

The advantages are the following:

-more effective

-faster acting

-dosages are reduced

-lower therapy costs

Dried extracts can be diluted in a decoction or placed in capsules, vaginal tablets, and granules for decoction.

Ointments

They are prepared by mixing the pharmaceuticals with olive or vegetable oil, and bees’ wax.

Syrups

Generally used for younger patients, they are a blend of sugar cane, and decoction of the pharmaceutical.

Note: Regardless of the form and preparation chosen, it is important to pay attention to a few details. Always choose quality products, that clearly state the name of the importer, the herbal composition, fabrication number, and expiration date on the box. As all phytotherapy products, Chinese herb looses strength with time.

Length of the therapy

For acute pathologies the medication is taken for a brief period (seven to ten days), whereas in chronic disorders they are taken from twenty days to a few months. If the herb are taken for an extensive period it is advisable to interrupt the cure for brief periods of time, for example a week per month.
